Riyam Ziad, a student of economics at the University of Baghdad, has won the title of Miss Baghdad 2013 organized by the Iraq Hunting Club. This is not the first time that the club has organized the contest. Since 2008, the club had been holding the contest exclusive for the children of the members of the Iraq Hunting Club.
Riyam Ziad was crowned Miss Baghdad 2013 by the organizer of the pageant.
Sana Amouri, president of the organizing committee of the pageant, had been until this year reluctant to call it Miss Baghdad out of fear of religious and social backlash. The pageant was called “Miss Baghdad Hunting Club” till last year. The Iraqi and foreign media has always dubbed the contest as “Miss Baghdad”. However, for the first time ever this year, the organizing committee has officially renamed the title to “Miss Baghdad”. The only prominent Miss Baghdad to date is Renee Dangoor who won the contest back in 1946.
