Alyssa Maitoza turned in her local title – Miss New Bedford’s Outstanding Teen – for the title of Miss Massachusetts’ Outstanding Teen, at the competition held in New Bedford on April 3.

Maitoza, a 16-year-old junior from Dartmouth, competed with 10 other young women, and performed a high-energy tap routine during the talent phase of the competition. She said her mind went blank the moment her name was announced.

“Honestly, nothing,” she said. “I could not think of anything. I was just so grateful in that moment, and that’s all I could really think about.”

Maitoza said her emotions were a little up-and-down throughout the day.

“I went through fluctuations of feeling really confident, and then feeling not-so-confident,” she said. “Feeling really happy, then really nervous. It was an emotional roller coaster for me.”

Preparing to compete for the national title in Orlando this summer is already on the mind of the confident Maitoza.

“It feels absolutely amazing,” she said. “I love Florida and I can’t wait to compete for the title of Miss America’s Outstanding Teen.”

Meanwhile, Maitoza said she’s excited about will also be getting to know many people across the Commonwealth.

“I hope to promote my platform, The Arts in Action, raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and just be a role model in my state,” she said. “I’m so beyond excited.”
